How to Store Butt Plugs: Hygiene, Materials, and Organization
By Jake Turner · Senior Editor · May 2025

Butt plugs require one additional storage consideration beyond standard sex toy hygiene: dedicated separation from toys used vaginally. This is a cross-contamination concern, not just an organization preference. Beyond that, storage protocol depends on material — silicone, stainless steel, glass, and TPE all have different cleaning and storage requirements. This guide covers all of them.
Note: Never store anal toys in the same compartment as vaginal toys without thorough cleaning and separate pouches. Cross-contamination between anal bacteria and vaginal tissue can cause bacterial vaginosis and other infections.

The Separation Rule
The non-negotiable foundation of butt plug storage: anal toys and vaginal toys must not share storage space without individual pouch separation. Anal bacteria (including E. coli) transferred to vaginal tissue causes infection. Even clean anal toys that have been thoroughly washed should be stored with clear separation — whether that means separate compartments in a box, separate pouches, or separate storage containers entirely.
The practical system: color-code pouches (blue for anal, pink for vaginal, for example) or use clearly labeled separate containers. In a shared storage box, use dividers to create dedicated sections. The goal is that there is never any ambiguity about which toy goes where.
Silicone Butt Plug Storage
Silicone butt plugs are the most common and easiest to clean. After every use: wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow to air dry fully before storage. For non-motorized silicone plugs: full sterilization by boiling (3 minutes) or bleach solution is possible and recommended if the plug will be shared or after any anal-to-vaginal crossover concern.
Store each silicone plug in its own cloth or silicone-safe pouch. Silicone-on-silicone contact transfers plasticizers — keep silicone toys separated by pouches or dividers. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
Stainless Steel Plug Storage
Stainless steel plugs (Njoy, B-Vibe, Aneros stainless) are the easiest to sterilize — boiling, bleach, or dishwasher (top rack, no soap). After sterilization, dry thoroughly with a clean cloth before storage. Metal is fully non-porous and holds no residue.
Store in a soft cloth pouch — metal against other metal can cause surface scratching. Keep away from other metal items that could cause impact damage. The weight of stainless plugs means they should sit flat in storage, not balanced on a narrow surface where they could tip and fall.
Glass Plug Storage
Borosilicate glass plugs are non-porous and easy to clean, but require impact protection in storage. Wrap in a soft cloth or store in a padded pouch before placing in a storage container. Never store glass plugs loose where they could contact other hard items — even a small chip makes a glass toy unsafe to use.
Inspect before every use: run a finger over the entire surface, check the base for any chips, and look for hairline cracks held to a light source. Retire any glass plug that shows any damage.
TPE and Rubber Plug Storage
Porous materials (TPE, TPR, jelly rubber) cannot be fully sterilized and are generally not recommended for anal use due to the difficulty of fully cleaning bacteria from porous materials. If you do use porous anal toys, always use a condom, clean promptly and thoroughly after every use, and replace more frequently than non-porous toys. Store with extra separation from other toys — porous materials can transfer odors and surface residue to adjacent items.
Vibrating and Rechargeable Plugs
Vibrating butt plugs (b-Vibe, We-Vibe Ditto, Lelo Hugo) have electronics that limit cleaning to surface-level methods. For waterproof-rated plugs: wash exterior thoroughly with toy cleaner or mild soap and water. The seam between the silicone body and any ABS components is a cleaning focal point — residue accumulates there.
Charge before storage if battery is low. Enable travel lock (if available) before storing to prevent accidental activation. Store with the charging cable.
Organizing a Collection with Anal Toys
In a mixed collection (anal and vaginal toys), the organization system must make the separation obvious and automatic. Best approach: dedicated section of a storage box with removable dividers, with all anal toys on one side and all vaginal toys on the other. Label the sections if needed. The Home in Bold box‘s removable dividers allow exactly this configuration — one locked box, clearly organized, with everything separated and hygienic.
Traveling with Butt Plugs
Pack anal toys in their own dedicated zip-lock bag or travel pouch, separate from all other travel items. This serves both hygiene and discretion. Metal and glass plugs need extra padding in luggage — wrap in clothing items to protect against impact. Enable travel lock on vibrating plugs. All plugs are TSA-compliant and present no issues at security screening.
